When to Service Your Boiler

Your home’s boiler is an important fixture, and one that provides a reliable source of heat and water. Installing a new boiler is something of an investment for home-owners too, with this process costing up to £3000 in some instances.

Given the cost and the importance of a boiler, it’s imperative that you look to maintain your unit and optimise its performance over time. Having your boiler serviced is central to this, so long as you employ the services of an accredited engineer.

But when exactly should your service your boiler? Here are some ideas to help you on your way:

1. The Annual Service

We’ll start with a preplanned service, which you should look to have completed annually by a Gas Safe registered engineer.

The timing of this type of service is important, as 12 months is ample time for a boiler to develop small faults and potential issues. However, it also creates a viable window in which to identify these faults and correct them before they become problematic or too expensive to repair.

In the case of most new boilers, an annual service is also a contractual requirement included in the terms of a manufacturers’ warranty or guarantee. Without this, the terms of your warranty may be voided whilst engineers could also refuse to work on your boiler.

2. When you’re Moving House

If you’ve just purchased and moved to a new property, now may also be the ideal time to have your boiler serviced.

This is particularly true if the previous property owners failed to have the boiler serviced, or if it’s an older unit that is simply showing signs of wear-and-tear.

Remember, buying a house can be expensive and it’s important to minimise costs wherever possible. Having the boiler in your new house serviced can help with this, whilst this also provides peace of mind that your heating system will work from the moment that you move in.

3. During the Summer

In some ways, it may seem counter-intuitive to have your boiler serviced during the summer, but there are actually a number of benefits to this.

Firstly, the demand for Gas Safe registered engineers and boiler checks is likely to be lower in the summer, making it easier to secure an appointment that’s convenient for you.

Secondly, a summer service enables you to identify any faults before the colder months of autumn and winter get underway. This provides a short window to repair these before the weather takes a turn for the worse, which can prove a Godsend if you have children or elderly relatives living in the property.
